About

Laojunshan National Park was the second national park to be created in China and is home to many unique species of animals and plants. Most famous of these include the Yunnan golden Monkey, Giant flying squirrels and the Red Panda.

In early 2009 some climbers exploring Yunnan, China came across the small town of Liming. Surrounded by red sandstone walls, small rivers, and canyons it was easy to fall in love with the place. After much negotiation with the local Government they gained access to start developing rock climbing in the park. Now in early January 2011 there are around 42 traditional rock climbing routes and potentially hundreds to thousands located in the park all within walking distance from the Liming.

This park already attracts a small number of day tourists coming up from Lijiang to see the 1000 turtle mountain. It's a sand stone mountain top caved out by the rain and it looks like the top of tortoise shells, giving its name.

The park entrance fee is 80rmb per person or 40rmb for students with cards. Once inside you can stay as long as you like!

Introduction form the Liming rock climbing guide:

" Nestled in the three river gorges scenic area in Northwestern Yunnan lays Laojunshan Park and a sandstone mecca named Liming (2100 meters). This area is a paradise for the simple fact of rich sandstone formations, unique and protected wild- life, 4500 meter peaks, outdoor adventure, and minority groups that are still rela- tively isolated from developing China. The park was established in the 1970’s and is China’s second National Park. Loajunshan park has become a leader in Yunnan and all of China for outdoor recreation opportunities. The area is open for mountain bik- ing, rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, and trekking for Chinese and for- eigners alike. With many hubs and entry points to the park, there is a wonder of things to discover.

The town of Liming is a central hub for the Lisu, Naxi, and Yi cultures and one cannot miss the 100-200 meter high walls of sandstone looming overhead. Hav- ing such a large concen- tration of sandstone in the vicinity makes this small settlement’s greatest attraction, and gave way to the one of the first sandstone Traditional Rock Climbing area in China. Crack systems here are very similar to the climbing in places like Indian Creek and the desert towers in the United States. Throughout history the local people have scaled these cliffs in search of beehives and bird’s nests, a climbing tradition that started perhaps centuries ago. Now tradi- tional rock climbers are pushing this an- cient attitude of climbing to new heights. We invite you to take a trip to this unde- veloped part of the world and discover the truly unique Liming." Mike Dobie, Liming Rock Climbing 2011 ©.
